Daptone Records Robbed

On president's day someone broke into Daptone Records in Bushwick and stole a bunch of stuff. Here's the note from Gabriel Roth on Brooklynvegan.

Here's a web site you can visit if you want to help them out. Authenticity not verified.

Budos Band playing a gig in NYC Thursday I wonder if they'll mention it.

I <3 you so I'll hit you in the face

The annual Valentine's Day Pillow Fight happened this weekend in San Francisco!! At 6pm at Justin Herman Plaza, people let loose on their loves...and total strangers. AMAZING. Click on the link above for the "official" video.

The New York City Pillow Fight will take place April 4. Mark your calendars now, it's being hosted by Newmindspace.

I will obviously update with the official location as the date gets closer. Who would miss a massive free pillow fight?!

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at Nokia Theater 2/13

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings played new music and old favorites on night one of a two night set at the Nokia Theater in NYC. It was brilliant, as usual.

Grizzly Bear

Grizzly Bear played a small acoustic set Saturday night (Valentine's Day) as part of the New Yorker Speak Easy series at Powerhouse Books in DUMBO. Music critic Sashe Frere Jones was on hand to introduce the band and I took full opportunity to meet him after the show - he was very pleasant.

Jefferey Eugenides read a short story from a recent collection he edited about love and actor Gabriel Byrne recounted his own story of a missed connection. Brilliant evening of literature, movies and music.

Lissy Trullie at Mercury Lounge

Last Wednesday Lissy Trullie took the stage at 11pm at Mercury Lounge for her EP Release. Here's video from the encore Hot Chip's "Ready for the Floor." Trullie played another gig in NY for a Fashion Week party a few days later and is headed to SF for her show at the de Young Museum's "Warhol Live" party.

Lenses and Cleanses

I recently spent an afternoon looking through photo magazines at the new Lomography store in the Village. Here's some people I learned about from jpgmag.com.

Clayton Cubitt - New Orleans raised photographer, mixes high art and low culture.  He did a whole series of portraits of people after Hurricane Katrina (that's a quick way to my heart!!) Here's a link to his blog with more on that great city.

Loretta Lux - Stockholm photographer - her largest body of work is portraits of pale children with piercing eyes.

Tadao Ando -  Japanese architect

Egon Schiele - Knew about him from Prague art class.

Lis Bokt - photographer

Colin Prior Beautiful landscape photography

Constant Anton Nieuwenhuys - belgian artist. New Babylon.

Gangs and Photos

Ross Kemp on Gangs: Sky One television presents Ross Kemp, an actor from the British series "The Eastenders" does documentary style pieces on gangs around the world including the Numbers gang in a maximum security prison in Cape Town, South Africa. He also examines gangs in Brazil, Columbia, Poland and American cities LA and St. Louis.

Documentary about photographer Nan Goldin. The bisexual artist lived in Boston and New York, battled drug addiction, had a sister who committed suicide at 18, and was an early photographer of drag queens.

Brush off your Gucci

Gucci Mane - Learned about this rapper from Fader.com.

Lissy Trullie

Sasha Frere Jones recently mentioned this breakout artist will play at a benefit Feb. 21 to celebrate the "Warhol Live" exhibit at the de Young museum in San Francisco. Then I see she will have her record release party on Wednesday night at the Mercury Lounge in NYC.

People have written she sounds like softer Velvet Underground with dancey new wave beats.

Love her cover of Hot Chip's "Ready for the Floor"

Get Yo Sound Fixed

Teddy Pendergrass : 1970s Funk and soul YUM YUM. Think Luther Vandross or Barry White.

Stars Like Fleas:Large Brooklyn band making indie rock, at times lovely and slightly discordant.  Headed to SXSW in March.

Crystal Stilts: Garage rock, post punk. Think Iggy Pop.

Cut Copy Ohh me likes! Very catchy pop. I could see these songs in Juno-esque movie soundtracks.

Antony and the Johnsons - Experimental folk rock. Reminds me a little of a mix of Leonard Cohen and Elliot Smith.

Animal Collective

Sigur Ros

Silje Nes: From Norway! Folksy tunes, could see drawing large crowds of hipsters at any festival. Goes perfect with a bottle of red wine in Winter. A favorite "Bright Night Morning"

Red Krayola: "progressive" indie rock. I like the lead singer's voice. (Reminds me of The Hold Steady) Like the song "when she went swimming."

FANcakes

February is not only Black History Month but it's Pancake Month too.

The Clinton Street Baking Company ( On Clinton St. between Houston and Stanton) voted best pancakes by NY Magazine will feature different flavored pancakes every few days all month long.

YUM YUM YUM. Highlights include poached pear with pecan streusal and warm maple caramel and fresh coconut pancaked with pineapple and macadamia nuts.

Snow Snow Snow

Redbull sponsored event Winter Jam 2009 building a snowboarding ramp on the Lower East Side for an event this weekend February 5-7.

Thursday February 5 is the professional snowboarding competition "Big Air in the Big Apple" while Saturday the 7th promises fun for everyone including food, music, jumps and snowmen. Best part about the whole event: It's free!!!  (Second Best Thing: It takes place in a public park!)

WOW! Expect pro snowboarders, an ice climbing wall and snow flume for sledding.

This reminds me of Icer Air in SF where they import snow on a very steep hill and let snowboarders have their way. HURRAH for NYC following suit.

Click Here for Amazing map to get to the East River Park for the event from the Department of Parks and Recreation.

These dogs must be tired

The idiotarod in San Francisco meant people dressed as dogs and raced down hills, stopping at bars to imbibe, with shopping carts, scooters and anything else to get them to the finish line. Flashmobs of crazy people gathering at last minute undisclosed locations- improv everywhere style.

Well it may have been banned in SF for a while but the NYC one just happened on Saturday 1/31/2009.

Check out the date for the link to the official site for Carts of Brooklyn. And here's some video!!!

Teams of five racing for money across NYC dressed as dogs, horses and more. AWESOME.

Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, Queens was the scheduled starting point. A woman i met in Red Hook Saturday night said it was changed at the last minute to throw off cops and others.

And here are links from the Carts website. Some new music and more:

Upcoming February Music

February 6 and 7: Beirut at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Also a treat that sold out.

February 13 and 14: The incredible Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings plays in hometown NYC at the Nokia Theater in Times Square. Sexy grooves just in time for Valentines Day.

February 14: Grizzly Bear and a slew of NY intellectuals and music afficionados pack the new Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO, Brooklyn for the New Yorker Speakeasy "Love is Strange" series.  My favorite music critic Sasha Frere Jones will be there. The evening is hosted by the New Yorker's fiction editor Deborah Treisman.

Apes and Androids show at Music Hall of Williamsburg 1/20/09

The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band opened.

The Apes and Androids came on with confetti flying into the air. The newly renovated venue was packed but the show wasn't sold out.  Here is video from the colorful encore. What a fun live show.
